COMMENT "...By and large, though, the characters are commonplace men or women trying to get by in a world they didn"t make. Isn't this the way things usually are? A couple of years ago, Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich went on record decrying "counter-culture values" that are anathema to "normal" Americans. Outside the Washingtopn Beltway, America yawned and shook its collective head, or laughed out loud, and life went on. Speaker Gingrich lives in the past; his "counter-culture" is what every American experiences as part of his or her daily life. He might as well have demanded legislation repealing the laws of gravity. He doesn't have a clue. That's the rhetoric of reactionary politics. This is a fact: nothing stays the same." Allen Steele in introduction to his book "ALL-AMERICAN ALIEN BOY" Seems to me that both Newt and Mr. Steele could adjust their nominal view points a bit. To call the counter-culture abnormal seems unfair, and Mr. Steel might consider that at least some traditional religeous values are not outdated as yet.
